Red Onion, Cilantro, Olive Oil, Salt and Lemon Juice

Sumac Onions bring instant brightness to everyday cooking. With just a few ingredients, you can create a tangy, fresh topping that transforms rich dishes into balanced, flavourful meals. Instead of relying on heavy sauces, this simple mixture adds acidity, texture, and colour in minutes.

Ingredient for Sumac Onions

Sumac is the key to flavouring these onions

Traditionally served alongside shawarma, kebabs, and grilled meats, sumac onions use lemon juice rather than vinegar. As a result, they taste clean and lively instead of sharp or pickled. The ground sumac delivers a citrus-like flavour while also adding its signature deep red hue. At the same time, olive oil softens the bite, and salt gently draws moisture from the onions, helping them relax without losing their crunch.

At Cooking 360, we look for practical ways to build flavour quickly. That is why this recipe fits perfectly into a home kitchen workflow. You can prepare it while your protein cooks, and then use it immediately as a finishing element. Even better, you can keep the ingredients on hand and make small batches whenever you need a lift.

Try sumac onions in donairs, wraps, grain bowls, roasted vegetables, or grilled chicken. They cut through richness, refresh the palate, and tie everything together.

Ultimately, this is not just a garnish. Instead, it is a simple tool that helps you cook smarter, balance flavours, and bring vibrant contrast to everyday meals. More about Sumac and its culinary uses.

How to Use

Once you make sumac onions, you will find endless ways to use them. For example, add them to burgers or sandwiches to replace heavier condiments and introduce a fresh, tangy contrast. You can also toss them into simple salads or spoon them over roasted potatoes to brighten earthy flavours. If you prefer a softer texture, let the onions sit for an extra 10 to 15 minutes before serving. On the other hand, if you want more bite, serve them right away. Try adding sliced radishes, a pinch of chili flakes, or extra parsley to customize the flavour while keeping the dish balanced and vibrant.
