Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes, The Foolproof Way, So Crispy

Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes

There is something dangerously addictive about well-made roasted potatoes. Crispy edges, soft centres, and just enough seasoning to keep you reaching back for another bite. These crispy air fryer roasted potatoes exist in that sweet spot where effort stays low, but results feel restaurant-worthy.

Russet is best for crispy potatoes

Russet potatoes work especially well here. Their high starch content helps create a fluffy interior while the air fryer does the heavy lifting on the outside. The key is moisture control. Washing and scrubbing the potatoes removes surface dirt, but drying them thoroughly before seasoning makes the real difference. Less surface moisture means faster browning and better crunch.

Simple Seasonings

This recipe keeps the seasoning simple on purpose. Olive oil carries flavour and encourages crisping, while garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper build a balanced savoury base. Nothing competes with the potato itself. Instead, every ingredient supports it.

Spacing also matters. Crowding the air fryer basket traps steam, which leads to soft potatoes. Laying the wedges in a single layer allows hot air to circulate freely, creating that golden exterior without deep frying. Flipping halfway through ensures even colour and texture on all sides.

What makes this air fryer method so reliable is consistency. The temperature stays high, the cook time remains predictable, and cleanup stays minimal. You get the flavour and crunch of oven-roasted potatoes in less time, without heating up the kitchen.

These potatoes work as a side for grilled meats, burgers, or roasted vegetables, but they rarely make it to the plate untouched. Serve them straight from the air fryer while they’re hot and crisp. If history has taught us anything, portion control is optional at best.

Notes

You can use your oven, it works just as well with the same temps, you may need a few minutes more to get the same crisp, but I enjoy both versions equally.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes

Why aren’t my air fryer roasted potatoes crispy?

Crispy air fryer roasted potatoes depend on moisture control and spacing. If the potatoes stay damp or sit too close together, they steam instead of crisp. Always pat the wedges dry before seasoning and arrange them in a single layer with space between each piece. Flip them halfway through cooking to promote even browning.

Should I soak potatoes before air frying?

Soaking is optional for air fryer roasted potatoes. Russet potatoes already contain enough starch to crisp well without soaking. If you do soak them, dry them thoroughly before seasoning. Excess moisture will reduce browning and slow crisping in the air fryer.

What temperature is best for air fryer roasted potatoes?

A temperature of 400°F (204°C) works best. High heat helps create a crisp exterior while keeping the inside fluffy. Lower temperatures often result in pale, soft potatoes that lack texture.

Can I use other potatoes instead of Russets?

Yes, but the texture will change. Russet potatoes produce the crispiest air fryer roasted potatoes because of their high starch content. Yukon Gold potatoes turn out creamier with slightly less crunch, while red potatoes stay firmer and less fluffy inside.

Why do I need to flip potatoes halfway through?

Flipping ensures even exposure to hot air on all sides. Without flipping, the side touching the basket browns faster, leading to uneven colour and texture.

How do I reheat air fryer roasted potatoes?

Reheat them in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 4-6 minutes. This restores crispness better than the microwave, which makes potatoes soft.

Can I make these ahead of time?

These potatoes taste best fresh. If needed, you can prep and season the wedges ahead, then air fry just before serving for maximum crispness.
